Industry Spotlight - Mark Eddington

Updated: Jan 6

We're recognizing the individuals that are actively supporting commercial/industrial refrigeration. The following is a brief look into Mark Eddington background and what advice he has to share with others.

"How did you get introduced to industrial refrigeration?"

In 2012 I started at Dunbar Mechanical as an apprentice. They wanted a "green" apprentice that wanted to learn ammonia refrigeration. The only experience I had prior was an 8-month fast track residential HVAC college class. When I first started working for Dunbar, I was onsite at two large facilities. The first ammonia system I got to see was a plant that had approximately 50,000lbs of ammonia. This plant had over 50 flooded style evaporators and a gas assisted pumper drum transfer system. It was very overwhelming at 1st, especially the amount of vessels. The 2nd system had approximately 12,000lbs of ammonia and was a typical overfeed system, much easier for me to follow and understand at the time. Within the first month I assisted changing Frick RXF panels to Frick Quantum HD panels, 7 in total, among many other tasks. I attribute my career success to the guidance of the Journeymen I worked around and my overall thirst for knowledge. For the past 5 years I've worked for Janssen Refrigeration based in Warren Michigan.

"What part of the job makes you want to stay in this industry?"

My favorite part of the industry is that it is generally not stagnant. I love troubleshooting, being challenged, and staying busy.

"What recent industry related challenge have you conquered and are proud to have prevail over?"

Over the past decade RAGAGAP and PSM/RMP have become a major part of our industry. Over the last few years, I have taken these courses and found them very interesting. I try to guide all of our customers into the correct path to be compliant and safe. It is especially hard to convince customers and season techs the importance of this field if they have no background in compliance. The worst saying is "this is the way we have always done it. " I feel that as an industry we still have a lot of room to grow, but I do the best I can on my behalf to make ammonia the safest most efficient industrial refrigerant.

"What is your favorite job task that you enjoy in this field?"

My favorite task is large scale pump downs and pump outs. Understanding what is going on inside the pipes, and moving ammonia around inside the system to where you want can be a challenge, but I find it very rewarding.

"What professional accomplishment do you aspire within the next three years?"

To gain my RETA CRST. Also to gain more knowledge in industrial refrigeration design and engineering.

Thank you, Mark, for your continued support to keep this industry cool & safe.
