We're recognizing the individuals that are actively supporting commercial/industrial refrigeration. The following is a brief look into Gerald Hessell background and what advice he has to share with others.
“How did you get introduced to industrial refrigeration?”
Cargill. I took an Engineering Associate role and after completion of the rotational program, was asked if I wanted to be a Maintenance Supervisor or be a Process Safety Management (PSM) Coordinator for the ammonia system. Knowing that not many people know about ammonia in the facility at that time, I figured it was my best way to make an impact with the company.
“What part of the job makes you want to stay in this industry?”
The satisfaction of helping someone solve a problem and make their day a little bit easier. Having maintained an ammonia system as a Utilities Supervisor in the past, it’s nice as a contractor to be able to help people fix similar issues I had as a Supervisor. It’s really rewarding to me, and I would say that motivates me the most to keep going.
“What recent industry related challenge have you conquered and are proud to have prevailed over?”
Replacing an Evaporative Condenser as a turnkey project (Structural replacement, piping replacement, controls updates, adding pumpout valves, crane rigging. etc.) and installing it all in a manner of a week. It was a lot of time and effort putting plans together and walking down other trades through the job, but it was rewarding once it all came together. It was a great, collective team effort where everyone worked well with each other.
“What is your favorite job task that you enjoy in this field?”
Researching information on equipment I’ve haven’t seen or experienced before, ask questions on what it is, how it works, and then figuring out a solution to address a facility’s issue.
“If you could give your younger self advice when you first started, what advice would that be?”
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if they may seem like silly questions to others. It’s best to ask a question and get it answered rather than assume, have some doubt, and have it come back to haunt you later.
“What professional accomplishment do you aspire within the next three years?”
Mentoring younger Service Techs and help them grow and develop in becoming Journeymen.
