When Are Safety Data Sheets Required?

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) must be maintained for each hazardous chemical used in the workplace. Safety data sheets must be readily accessible during each work shift to employees in their work area. Employees must be provided with effective information and training to the extent necessary to protect them in the event of a spill/leak.

§1910.1200 – (Subpart Z– Toxic and Hazardous Substances) Hazard Communication “HAZCOM”

1.) Verify a complete list is available of hazardous chemicals known to be present in the workplace. Implement a written hazard communication program that includes the facility requirements for labels/forms of warning, safety data sheets, and employee information and training.

(A hazardous chemical is any chemical which is classified as a physical or health hazard, a simple asphyxiant, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas, or hazard not otherwise classified. Appendix A to §1910.1200 contains classification criteria for physical and health hazards)

2.) Confirm that employees are informed of any operations in their work area where hazardous chemicals are present, and the location and availability of the facility written hazard communication program. Train employees on the methods to detect presence/release of hazardous chemical, including visual appearance or odor of the substances, physical/health hazards associated with the substances, PPE to be used, emergency procedures, safe work practices, safety data sheet use, labeling system, and an explanation of how to obtain and use the hazard information and written program.
